There are some exciting new things going on in the Aquatic Department! Please stop by and say hello to our new Director of Aquatic’s, Lynn Wheeler. Lynn has taken the summer months to revamp our Aquatic department from head to toe. She has trained her lifeguards to be rescue ready at all times while also being helpful to the members when they need it. Lynn has brought back the Y’s passion to teach people of all ages how to swim and how to be safe around water.
The Y has classes for all ages. The most popular classes this past summer were the parent and child classes. One is never too young or too old to have fun in the water.
We have three pools here at the YMCA of Norwalk. The Aux Pool is kept at about 86 degrees and is used for swim lessons, parent and child classes, senior swim and exercise classes. The Main pool has a depth of 4ft. in all directions. This pool is kept at 80 degrees for those who like lap swimming. In the same area, we have a separate Dive Well with two diving boards. The Dive Well is used for lessons, water fitness, SCUBA, and a practice pool for Next Generation Dive Team.
Please remember that any child that can not swim without a floatation device must be accompanied by an adult in the pool with them. All children 8 years old and under that can swim on their own must have an adult present on the pool deck with them. Children 12 years and older that know how to swim must have an adult in the building while they are swimming.
The Connecticut State Department of Public Health requires all persons to shower with soap and warm water before entering the pool.
Bathing caps must be worn by all with hair that falls below the nape of the neck. This rule will be strictly enforced by the lifeguards.
Street shoes are not permitted in the pool areas.
The National Y requires that absolutely no cell phones, cameras, or video cameras be allowed on the pool deck, or in the locker rooms. This rule is to protect children against child pornography on the internet.
There is always time to learn about water safety and how to swim. Just because the summer is drawing to an end, doesn’t mean the fun in the water has to too. We offer swim lessons, exercise classes and plenty of open swim opportunities for all ages.
